Sanger, born in 1879 to an Irish Catholic immigrant family in Corning, New York, was trained as a nurse and spent much of her life advocating for women to choose when to have their children and how many.

In the early 1900's, she worked with immigrant families in the tenaments of New York City where she witnessed poverty, disease and the death of many women during childbirth. It was here that she began her crusade to help women access reliable and safe contraception.
